The Potential and The Challenge

Across the board, we hear from food waste experts at every part of the food supply chain that data is key to solving this massive problem. Access to data and the insights from that data is not as widely available as needed. Innovations in data collection and analysis as well as the willingness of industry players, academics and government entities to share data for the greater good of the planet is paramount. 

The Indoor Agriculture Industry At a Glance

Every year, Californians throw away nearly 6 million tons of food scraps and in the U.S. ~40% of food that is produced is wasted, whereas one person out of eight in California is struggling with food insecurity. This contrast shows the importance of addressing this challenge,  preventing food waste and increasing equitable access to nutritious foods. The start ups and innovators featured in this section are acting to respond to this issue with innovative solutions.
